Mudashiru Obasa, the embattled lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I, has broken his silence on his recent removal as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa, who first entered the Assembly in 2007 and became Speaker in 2015, was ousted from his position on January 13, 2025, amidst misconduct allegations.

During a press briefing at his residence in the GRA area of Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, on Saturday, Obasa addressed swirling rumors about his alleged gubernatorial ambitions and the circumstances surrounding his impeachment.
“Having ambition to become a governor is not a sin. Is it?” Obasa asked rhetorically. “I’ve never publicly declared an interest in succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. I challenge any leader in the state to prove otherwise,” he stated firmly.
Obasa also emphasized his qualifications and experience, saying, “I said it on the floor of the House during the budget presentation that I had no governorship intentions at the time. However, that does not mean I lack the capacity or experience to lead if the opportunity arises. I still stand by that.”
The former Speaker criticized the process that led to his removal, describing it as undemocratic. “I am still the Speaker until due process is followed. The militarization of the Assembly complex during the impeachment was unnecessary and unacceptable. My removal was orchestrated in my absence while outside the country,” Obasa said.
Obasa’s ouster was supported by over two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly, marking a decisive turn in Lagos politics. Following his removal, his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was sworn in as the new Speaker, making history as the first female leader of the legislative body in the South-West region.

Despite the setback, Obasa remains a significant figure in Lagos politics. His journey from a first-time legislator in 2007 to a long-serving Speaker underscores his influence and resilience in the state’s political landscape.
