TOP SPECTRE – The drama at the Lagos State House of Assembly has taken another twist. Ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa dramatically returned to the legislative chambers on Thursday, escorted by heavily armed security operatives amid a political power struggle. His arrival reignited tensions, fueling an already heated leadership tussle.
Obasa’s Shocking Return Amid Leadership Battle

For weeks, the Lagos Assembly has been in turmoil. Obasa was removed on January 13, 2025, following a vote of no confidence by more than two-thirds of the lawmakers. His former deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was swiftly elected as the first female Speaker in Lagos history.
Obasa, absent during his impeachment, has since rejected the decision. On Saturday, January 25, 2025, he declared his removal unconstitutional and insisted he remained the legitimate Speaker. His return to the Assembly Complex, surrounded by a strong security presence, has intensified the standoff.
Supporters Rally as Lawmakers Stand Firm
As Obasa entered the complex, his loyal supporters gathered outside, chanting in his favor. However, Meranda and 36 lawmakers remain firm, asserting that Obasa’s impeachment was final. They have passed a vote of confidence in Meranda, effectively shutting down any attempts to overturn the decision.
In a bid to consolidate her leadership, Meranda met with key political stakeholders. She visited the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and held talks with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. These meetings signal her determination to solidify her position.
Security Tensions Escalate as Police Withdraw Speaker’s Orderlies
Hours before Obasa’s return, a fresh controversy erupted. Victor Ganzallo, an aide to Speaker Meranda, accused the police of withdrawing all security personnel attached to her and the Assembly Complex. In a strongly worded statement, he questioned whether this was a politically motivated attempt to destabilize the current leadership.
“The timing of the security withdrawal, combined with Obasa’s defiance, raises serious concerns. Is this part of a larger plot?” Ganzallo questioned.
The Lagos State Police Command has yet to officially respond. However, spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh would address the issue soon.
