TOP SPECTRE – Real Madrid let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers as Jude Bellingham’s controversial red card overshadowed their 1-1 draw against Osasuna. The result means Los Blancos missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of La Liga, leaving the title race wide open.
Bellingham’s Dismissal Sparks Controversy
Just days after his Champions League heroics against Manchester City, Bellingham found himself at the center of controversy. The England international was sent off in the 39th minute for allegedly using foul and abusive language toward referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero. It was only his second career dismissal in a Real Madrid shirt—the first coming in March 2024 against Valencia when he was shown a second yellow after the final whistle.

However, Bellingham strongly denied the accusations, claiming his words were misinterpreted.
“It’s frustrating when a referee makes a decision based on something I didn’t say,” Bellingham stated post-match. “I remember the moment clearly—it was just an expression to myself, not directed at him. There was no intent to insult.”
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti didn’t hold back in his post-match press conference, coming to Bellingham’s defense.
“I think the referee didn’t understand the English well,” Ancelotti said. “Yes, Bellingham used an expletive, but it was not aimed at the official. The red card was a rash decision.”
The dismissal left Madrid with a mountain to climb, and their troubles worsened in the second half.
Before the red card incident, Kylian Mbappé had given Real Madrid the lead with a clinical finish in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a pinpoint cross from Federico Valverde. The goal marked Mbappé’s 17th strike of the season, further cementing his impact in La Liga.
However, Osasuna clawed their way back into the game in the 58th minute. Eduardo Camavinga was controversially adjudged to have fouled Ante Budimir in the box, and the striker made no mistake from the penalty spot, leveling the score at 1-1.
Despite being a man down, Real Madrid pushed for a late winner. Vinicius Jr dazzled with his footwork in the box but saw his shot dramatically cleared off the line by Alejandro Catena. Luka Modric also had a golden opportunity but failed to hit the target after an exquisite delivery from Vinicius.

With Atlético Madrid and Barcelona breathing down their necks, the title race is now tighter than ever. If Atlético defeat Celta Vigo later today, they will leapfrog Real Madrid to claim the top spot. Meanwhile, Barcelona could also overtake them on goal difference with a win against Rayo Vallecano on Monday.
