Brazilian football icon Marcelo, one of the most decorated players in football history, has officially announced his retirement at the age of 36. The legendary left-back, who earned 58 caps for Brazil, leaves behind an incredible legacy that spans over two decades of top-level football.
A Glorious Career at Real Madrid

Marcelo’s journey to stardom began at Fluminense, where his talent quickly caught the eye of European scouts. In 2007, at just 18 years old, he made the switch to Real Madrid—a move that would define his career.
During his 15-year stay at the Bernabéu, Marcelo won an astonishing 25 major trophies, including:
- Five UEFA Champions League titles
- Six La Liga titles
- Two Copa del Rey titles
- Five FIFA Club World Cups
- Three UEFA Super Cups
- Four Spanish Super Cups
Reflecting on his journey, Marcelo shared an emotional message on social media:
“At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileño. Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, one of the captains, and so many magical nights at the Bernabéu. What a journey! My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything.”
A Historic Leader at the Bernabéu
Marcelo made history in 2021 when he was named Real Madrid’s first non-Spanish club captain in 117 years. His leadership on and off the pitch was instrumental in maintaining the club’s dominance in European and domestic competitions.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez paid tribute to the Brazilian great, saying:
“Marcelo is one of the greatest left-backs in the history of Real Madrid and world football. We have had the privilege of enjoying his magic for a long time. He is one of our greatest legends, and Real Madrid is and will always be his home.”
Life After Madrid

Marcelo bid farewell to Real Madrid at the end of the 2021-22 season, embarking on a short-lived spell at Greek side Olympiacos. However, after just five months, he terminated his contract and made a heartfelt return to Fluminense in 2023.
Back at his boyhood club, Marcelo played 68 matches over two seasons, rekindling his connection with Brazilian football. However, his time at Fluminense came to an abrupt end last November following a reported dispute with manager Mano Menezes, leading to his mutual departure.
