Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic hardship confronting Nigerians, particularly low-income earners. He lamented the excessive charges imposed by Point of Sale (POS) operators on petty traders and small-scale business owners struggling to access cash.

Obi made his remarks during a courtesy visit to His Grace, Alexander Ibezim, Archbishop of the Province on the Niger and Bishop of Awka Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). The visit coincided with a financial donation Obi made to Paul University, Awka, a faith-based tertiary institution.
“The hardship in Nigeria is overwhelming,” Obi stated. “How can ordinary citizens survive when even a roadside pepper seller has to pay exorbitant charges just to access her own money? What remains of her profit after those deductions? No nation is governed like this. I will officially write to the president to address these issues because this is simply too much.”

Speaking to journalists on the issue, Obi declined a detailed interview but reaffirmed his intention to submit a formal complaint highlighting the financial burden on everyday Nigerians due to the rising POS charges.
Continuing His Commitment to Education
In line with his longstanding commitment to supporting education, Obi donated ₦30 million to Paul University during his visit, bringing his total contribution to the institution to ₦50 million in 2024. He promised continued support into 2025, emphasizing that his philanthropy is driven by a passion for societal development rather than self-promotion.
“My Lord, I commend the remarkable work you are doing here in shaping a better society,” Obi told Archbishop Ibezim. “This marks my third visit since I left office as governor, and I will keep returning and supporting your efforts.”
Independent observers recently disclosed that Obi allocated over ₦1.5 billion to humanitarian causes in 2024. Reflecting on this, he humbly noted that his charitable deeds are motivated by genuine concern for humanity rather than publicity.
Commendations from Archbishop Ibezim
In response to the donation, Archbishop Ibezim lauded Obi as a visionary leader motivated by selfless service rather than personal gain.
“Many pursue leadership for their own interests, but Obi stands out as a true patriot devoted to Nigeria’s peace and progress,” Ibezim remarked. “We constantly pray for his protection and wisdom as he continues to impact lives positively.

“This generous support for Paul University will be judiciously used, and we look forward to welcoming him again. It is impossible to discuss educational advancement in Nigeria without acknowledging his significant contributions.”
Obi’s unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts and education continues to resonate with Nigerians, further cementing his reputation as a leader driven by purpose and compassion.
